Graphic Design

Sowsan Hassan

Submission Theme: There are many things that make Bahrain beautiful, the clear oceans, the thriving industry and of coarse the people; however, it's in the subtle beauty of the past that I find the best of Bahrain, my concept is simple: the beauty of the past; personally, looking at items that were made deacdes ago connects me with with my ancestors, I start to imagine the people who made them and how they lived their lives, when I look at an old ship, house or piece of furniture, I feel closer to my country and to myself.

Submission Name: Bahrain coin Submission Theme: Bahraini coins resembles more than just a financial value, its memories and stories, the sound that it makes as we shake it, the beautiful texture, the elegant colours, the design, all of that became part of a culture we live in. The anticipation of kids in eid, the change we get at the cold store or the end of a wait to see which team we will play with at a soccer match, all of that and more makes our beloved Bahraini coin an entity that we want to have in our lives.

Submission Name: "Sheikh Sayyed"

Submission Theme: This is a man I met in a parking lot. I could tell that he was "somebody" once and that he had a story to tell. It seemed he was a man who used to be so proud, and everyone knew. It was the way he said his name to me, when I asked, he said "Sheikh Sayyed!" and his head was held high.

Submission Theme: "Morning blues in Muharraq".

These photos were taken in Muharraq at an early morning in October 2009. I find Muharraq's rich cultural inheritance very inspiring and aesthetic. Blue and shades of sand are the dominant colours in these compositions and to me, this combination represents life.

Submission Name: Bahrain 2800 B.C. – 2010 A.D.

Submission Theme: Bahrain balances its drive for modernization and its respect for ancient heritage. The preservation of the 5000 year-old A’ali Burial Mounds is its proof: the land occupied by these graves could have been easily converted to prime real estate property but the Kingdom of Bahrain has allowed it to exist side-by-side with contemporary roads and buildings.

Fatima Dincsoy - 'Crossing the Line'

Submission Theme: For my short story, I concentrated on the issue of traffic, which is a verypresent one in Bahrain. We all deal with the various traffic complicationsin this country, and we are all affected by the results of neglectfulplanning, incomplete driver training and poor enforcement of laws indifferent ways. I would like to raise awareness of these issues -hopefullyresulting in valuable change- as well as present the good-natured and kindcharacter of the Bahraini people. It is a story of dreams, of goodintentions, and of loss.

“Baby are you down, down, down, down, down... Even if the skies are falling down...”

The music is blasting from the stereo system, yet unable to drown out the sound of the exhaust. Omar loves it. It’s one of the most enjoyable things about driving -the sound of it. It gives him presence; it makes people look at him. He could pass as a race car driver, with his mirrored glasses on, the collar on his shirt unfolded, the bottom of his car just above the road. The road - his home, his territory. If he’d had the support that Lewis had, he could be up there right now, without a doubt. Omar has got the passion, he’s got the talent. At age 19, he could already be on his way to winning a championship...

Chandan Sen Guptaemail - 'The Land with a Soul'

Submission Theme: The geniality of the people of Bahrain is infectious.Their compassion for fellow human beings, of all nationalities, iscertainly stirring. But more than that, their benevolence in all walksof life inspires a humanitarian way of life amongst those around them. This is a unique aspect of Bahrain’s culture, a result of itstolerance and concern for human feelings. How else can one explain thepeaceful and friendly coexistence of various nationalities on itssoil? Through the following passages I pay my tribute to Bahrain’sgreatest asset – its people, whose greatness I will cherish forever.

Its name was Dilmun years before.

Tylos followed when Greeks came ashore.

Deep in the sea is sweet spring water.

By the name Bahrain it is known all over.

Long before the aircraft banked to makeits final descent toward the runway of Bahrain International Airport, letting in a glimpse of brick and concrete structures, tied by neatgeometrically arrayed streets, through the open window, the waters ofthe Arabian Gulf shimmered into view. Reflected sunlight from thesparkling blue water of the shallow sea and the yellow sand beneathit, melded like primary colours on an artist’s palette to lend abrilliant emerald hue to the aquatic expanse.
