Singapore Events

With its world-class infrastructure, advanced amenities and safe environment,

Singapore has played host to a number of high profile international and local events.

Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix

One of the events that placed Singapore on the world map is the world’s only Formula 1 night race. The successful international-level racing event has been held in Singapore since 2008, dazzling 85,000 spectators and telecasted around the world. Ever year, the 5.073-km long Marina Bay Street Circuit is spectacularly lit up, showcasing Singapore’s scenic route and landmarks with 1,500 lighting projectors. Superstar drivers like Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso take to the tarmac, while music acts such as Mariah Carey, Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce and Adam Lambert have provided electrifying fringe entertainment. International and regional superstars

and hotshots have also been spotted in Singapore during the races, including billionaire Richard Branson, Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan, designer Marc Jacobs, and socialite Paris Hilton.

Youth Olympic Games

Singapore’s world-class amenities were fully utilised when it hosted the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010. Preparations were underway almost immediately after the announcement; the Youth Olympic Village was readied, motifs for the 26 different sports were unveiled, the Olympic Education Programme was launched, and over 20,000 volunteers were trained. To draw in bigger crowds, Youth Ambassadors such as Russian pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva and American swimmer Michael Phelps were selected. All eyes turned towards Singapore as the Olympic torch arrived on the island and

in the process, made Singapore the benchmark for future Youth Olympic Games.

Barclays Singapore Open

The Barclays Singapore Open has earned its place in the history books as a tournament that helped build the foundations for tournament golf in Asia. Held at Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong and Tanjong championship courses, the prestigious event features a strong line-up of star players such as Australia’s Adam Scott, who clinched the title for an unprecedented third time in 2010.

HSBC Women’s Champions

The Tanah Merah Country Club has been home to the HSBC Women’s Champions since 2008. The premier golf event sees the world’s top female golfers descending upon the Lion City to battle it out on the green each year. Australian Karrie Webb clinched the prize purse of US$1.4 million in 2011.

Singapore Food Festival

Held in July every year, the Singapore Food Festival helped seal the country’s reputation as a food paradise when it was launched in 1994. Foodies tuck into great deals, fabulous feasts and cooking workshops, anchored by a uniquely Singaporean theme each year. In 2010, the festival celebrated Chinese dialect food.

World Gourmet Summit

Singapore also celebrates the annual World Gourmet Summit each year, a gastronomic extravaganza like no other. Culinary maestros such as three-Michelin-starred Chefs Bruno Menard from France and Ferran Adria from Spain, and two-Michelinstarred Chefs Michel Rostang and Andrea Berton, cooked up a storm in town last year. Culinary masterclasses, gala dinners and tastings for fine food like wines and cheeses, are just some of the activities that take place during this three-week event.

National Day

On August 9 ever year, Singapore Citizens swathe themselves in patriotic red and white as they celebrate the nation’s birthday. Dazzling fireworks, an inspiring parade and rousing song-and-dance performances bring the nation closer together in patriotic zeal. The last few years have seen major celebrations taking place at the one-of-a-kind floating platform at Marina Bay, set against the illuminated backdrop of Singapore’s impressive skyline. The entire nation takes part, with different contingencies of the Armed Forces and youth groups like the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts marching together against the soundscape of the uniquely Singaporean ‘Kallang Roar’.
