The regional capital of Copiapó is home to most of the region’s population of 254,336. With a total land area of 75,176 km2, this region has some of the world’s highest peaks including Mt. Ojos Del Salado whose elevation of 6,893 m makes it the world’s tallest volcano. Atacama offers a striking repository of unique natural attractions, most notably the “blooming desert”, a natural phenomenon caused as heavy spring rains suddenly force 2,000 species of native fl owers to bloom in otherwise parched desert expanses. In the north, the arid Atacama Desert dominates the landscape while south of the Copiapó River the region is criss-crossed by massive ridges that give rise to myriad east-west valleys and ravines. Regional economic activity is lead by mining, mostly copper and iron, which accounts for 42.7% of regional GDP. Next in line is farming, with 4.3% of regional GDP followed by the marine products industry which contributes 1.7 percent of regional GDP. Atacama is also known for its vast coastal plains and stunning secluded beaches. Leading tourist attractions include beaches, lagoons and national parks.
