Metropolitan Region

Extending over an area of 6 provinces and centring around Santiago, the nation’s capital, this region is home to more than 40% of the country’s population and the seat of the judicial and executive branches of government. As such, most key events in the political and economic life of the nation take place in Santiago.

Región Metropolitana

Esta región alberga 6 provincias con la ciudad de Santiago, la capital nacional, en su centro. Se concentra más de 40% de la población del país, y aquí se encuentran las sedes del poder ejecutivo y judicial, por lo que gran parte de la actividad política y económica se desarrolla en esta región.

Metropolitan Region

Strategically located in a highly diverse natural and cultural setting, Santiago stands in the centre of a region totalling 18,429 km2. A state of the art airport provides outstanding domestic and international connections. The Metropolitan Region boasts world-class ski resorts, national parks and nature reserves, all just a short drive away from the city. Santiago is a dynamic, diverse city with athriving cultural life offering all of the amenities of a large metropolis, including museums, cinemas, theatres, and concert halls. The city surrounds offer countless points of interest. Santiago has some of the most modern transportation infrastructure in all of Latin America. The quality of the highways around the city is excellent, including the new Costanera Norte, a toll-based expressway that passes below downtown and connects the Eastern and Western extremes of the city in a 25-minute drive. The city’s public transportation encompasses an efficient and continuously expanding metro system and bus lines. An integrated fare system allows passengers to make metro-to-bus, bus-to-bus or bus-to-metro transfers all for a fixed price using a rechargeable pre-paid smart card.

Additionally, taxis can be found in abundance throughout the city at almost any hour. An ideal place to do business, Santiago is noted for its advanced information and communications technology, low operating costs, and high levels of public safety. A highly competitive region, Santiago has an efficient financial system, leading-edge communications, and highly developedservice platforms. Santiago is the seat of the country’s most important tertiary education institutions. The quality of the education imparted by these highly specialized, degreegranting institutions is recognized both at home and abroad.

The regional economy centres around manufacturing, agribusiness, and services. Metropolitan Santiago accounts for over 50% of the manufacturing sector output countrywide and the entire region stands on prime farmland. Services run the full gamut from health and tertiary education, to engineering and film locations. Industrial products exhibiting significant export growth include basic chemicals, ferrous and nonferrous metal products, and machinery and equipment. Leading agribusiness items include wines, and dried and fresh fruit.

In addition to being a key point of departure for travel throughout Chile, Santiago is a popular destination for both excursions throughout the surrounding region and attractions within the city. Day or weekend trips from Santiago include skiing, vineyards, parks, and the Pacific coast. The closet ski resort to Santiago is less than an hour away, with several more within a 3 hour drive. Half a dozen vineyards are all easy day trips from Santiago. Nearby national parks and reserves offer everything from hiking, camping, and horseback riding to hot springs, bird watching, and rafting. The pacific coast is less than a 2 hour drive, where the port city of Valparaíso and the beach town of Viña del Mar are found.

Within the city, there are places of interest such as Plaza de Armas, the historical city center square encircled by the Palacio de la Real Audencia, now home of the National History Museum, the 18th century Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Municipality of Santiago, a national monument. The square itself and the several blocks of pedestrian boulevards which surround it are always a bustle with locals of all types including vendors, artists and street performers. Around the corner is the government palace La Moneda with adjoining museum. The nearby bohemian neighborhood of Bella Vista has undergone a revamping phase which has increased traffic to its restaurants, art galleries, shops, pubs and discos by tourists and locals alike.

 

Región Metropolitana

Esta región, cuenta con una localización estratégica privilegiada y un entorno natural y cultural diverso, Santiago se encuentra localizado en esta región de 18.429 km2. Un aeropuerto internacional permite la conexión de la región con todo el país y el mundo. Rodeada de un entorno natural privilegiado, cercana a centros de esquí de categoría internacional, un parque nacional y reservasnaturales. Culturalmente activa, dinámica y diversa, Santiago posee los atractivos propios de una gran ciudad - museos, cine, teatros de música, con varios interesantes lugares que visitar en sus alrededores.

Santiago tiene un sistema de infraestructura para transporte que es uno de lo más moderna en todo América Latina. La calidad de las carreteras que rodean la ciudad es superior, incluso el nuevo Costanera Norte, un autopista que pasa por debajo del centro de la cuidad y une los extremos poniente y oriente en un camino de solo 25 minutos. Además, la cuidad cuenta con un transporte publico que consiste en un eficiente sistema de un metro subterráneo y líneas de autobuses, las cuales se siguen ampliando. Un sistema integrado de pasaje permite que el pasajero suba, baje y cambie entre el metro y el bus, ocupando una tarjeta prepagada y recargable. Por otro parte, hay taxis en abundancia por todos lados de la ciudad a casi cualquier hora.

Un lugar ideal para hacer negocios, Santiago se destaca por el importante nivel de desarrollo de tecnología de información, bajos costos para instalar oficinas y altos niveles de seguridad. Estas características las convierten en un lugar atrayente para los inversionistas nacionales y extranjeros. En Santiago se encuentran importantes centros de educación superior y de postgrado, que cuenta con altos niveles de especialización y calidad, lo que ha permitido su proyección internacional en la formación de profesionales.

Actualmente los sectores que caracterizan la vocación productiva de la región son la industria manufacturera, agroindustria y servicios. Santiago metropolitana contribuye el 50% de la producción manufactura, y la región posee suelos agrícolas de gran calidad.

En el sector de servicios se destaca un gran espectro de salud, universitarias, ingeniería, y localizaciones para filmar películas. Entre los productos que presentan mayor presencia y desarrollo exportador se encuentran productos metálicos, productos de la industria del metal no ferroso, máquinas y equipos. En la agroindustria, se resaltan los vinos, frutos secos y frutas.

Santiago no solo es un punto de partida importante para viajes a lo largo de Chile, sino también un destino preferido tanto por las excursiones en sus alrededores como por las atracciones turísticas dentro la ciudad.

Entre las excursiones de un día o un fin de semana posibles incluye destinos como centros de esquí, viñas, parques, y la costa Pacifica. El centro de esquí más cercano a la ciudad queda a menos de una ahora, y varios otros quedan dentro de un tiempo de 3 horas. Una media docena de viñas son buen viajes de un día. En los parques y reservas nacionales cercanos se destaca trekking, camping, cabalgatas, termas, observación de aves y rafting. El Océano Pacifico queda menos de 2 horas, donde se encuentra el puerto-ciudad Valparaíso y las playas de Viña del Mar.

Dentro de la ciudad, hay lugares de interés como la Plaza de Armas, el centro histórico de la ciudad rodeado por el Palacio de la Real Audencia donde ubica actualmente el Museo de la Historia Nacional, la Catedral Metropolitana del siglo XVIII, y la Municipalidad de Santiago, un monumento nacional. En la plaza y en los bulevares peatonales alrededor, se encuentra animados de gente que incluyen vendedores, artistas callejeros, habitantes y transeúntes. A la vuelta queda el palacio gubernamental La Moneda con su museo contiguo. En otro barrio, la zona bohemio Bella Vista, un proceso de modernizar ha dado una nueva oleada de restaurantes, galerías, tiendas, pubs y discos popular tanto entre los turistas como los residentes.
