Branding Materials Glossary

Here is a breakdown of some of the materials that are used in the manufacture of branding products. Ensure that you choose the right material to use, when selecting your branding products.

· PVC
Used as standard for banners. Reinforced with string on the inside and plastic on the outside. There are 3 ways to print on pvc: digital printing, silk screening and vinyl cutting.

· Polyester
Synthetic fibre. Used for pop-ups and eezee shades. Many different types of material. Natural fibres such as cotton and wool not often used because it fades quickly.

· Vinyl
Thin sticker with glue. Uses such as vehicle signage. These products have different thicknesses which will last for 1 yr, 5 yrs, 7 yrs and 9 yrs. Cast vinyl is extremely thin, more expensive and lasts for 5 years. There are only a certain amount of available colours.

· Cotton
Natural fibre that is not used very often.

· Mesh
Used for wrapping of buildings to enable vision from the inside but not the outside – 1 way vision.

· Chromadeck
Thin coated metal plate with 2 colours – white & yellow. Used for signage boards. Sheet size: 1.450 x 1.225. Frames that are used for chromadeck are made of square tubing.

· ABS
Thin plastic sheet. This could be used as an alternative for chromadeck although it is not as strong. Used indoor and is not framed.

· Aluminium
Many different types. The thin sheets are used for vinyl signage, and the stronger aluminium is used for roll-ups.

· Fibreglass
Thin resin strips of glass. Strong and lightweight. The pop-up frames are made of fiberglass. The product will always return to it’s original shape.

· Corex
Supplied in 3,4 or 5ml thickness. Standard for short term signage on roads. Posters etc.

· Forex
Similar to Perspex but cheaper and more brittle.

· Polycarbonate
Used for banner walls. It is a plastic film that gets laminated.

· White Film
Thin plastic form with a very smooth surface and a photo like finish. Lamination is required or print will come off. Pvc does not curl at the ends but white film does.

· Magnets
Thin 0.91 magnetic sheets. It is white in colour with a black magnet at the back. Used for vehicle signage. Magnet size: 640mmwide (some are 640x420m2)

· Velcro
Tape form with or without glue. Variety of uses eg: bottom of pop-up and fabric banner walls.

The Different Print Processes

· Colour Matching

· CMYK

– this is a breakdown of four colours.
C: Cyan M: Magenta Y: Yellow K: Black
With these four colours you can make up all the colours. This breakdown is used for all digital printing. NB: Always get the colours. Not 100%

· Pantone – this is the breakdown for spot colours. There are thousands of these colours, they are usually used for corporate colours. These have to be supplied with all jobs. More reliable.

· Digital Printing – Outdoor.
Dpi: dot per inch. The ink is permanent resolution, different to indoor.
Outdoor is waterproof, uv resistant and does not fade in the sun. Advisable to roll up the banner rather than folding it up. Colour matching will never be 100% the same second time round. Generally used for full colour printing jobs.

· Digital Printing – Indoor.
Same as outdoor except it is water resistant but not waterproof. Gives a higher print quality and we laminate because of the water resistance. Lamination not dependant on the plastic. Encapsulation – thin plastic border. Vacuum padding gives strength to a poster.

· Silk Screening
This cuts out the positive shape. Silk screening is used with a light sensitive solution. Behind the shape is a uv light that hardens it, then water is used to wash it. It is a costly procedure to be used for a small amount of prints.

· Litho Printing
Dye sublimation with wax paper on reverse. Used on tiles and full colour pop-ups. Use a heat press.

· Dye Sublimation
Problems with the colours never coming out bright eg: black comes out as a dark grey.

· Vinyl Cutting

· Pad Printing
Portable art.

· Engraving
Laser engraving – burns / draws 3d pictures in glass.

· Sandblasting
Cover with a mask and stencil blow into glass.

· Laser Cutting
Laser cuts out lettering.

· Etching
Done on a copper plate - cover with material and throw acid over which burns into the material.

· Vacuum Forming

· Injection Molding
Use plastic or rubber, heat it and put it into a mould.

· Fibreglass Forming
Used to fix a crack. Fibre sheets.

Artwork - Hints & Tips

· Programmes
Corel Draw:
vector programme although bitmaps can be used. Artwork in vector format should be saved for this program. You can use different file formats that are compatible with Coral Draw such as: CDR, EPS, or AI. These files are very small and can be e-mailed. This is a much better way to print onto products such as Pop-Ups, Bunting, Telescopics, and Flying banners. Screen-printing brings out colours a lot more clearly and the colours will not fade very easily.

Freehand: Also a vector programme. Can work on Mac. We can also receive artwork in Freehand. If you receive artwork from a Mac – ask the client to export the artwork into this programme.

Photoshop: No vectors can be used in this programme as this is a bitmap programme. Generally used if there are full colour pictures in the design. This programme is used for banners such as Roll-ups, A-frames, pvc, posters etc.

· Resolution

· Vector layouts
Made up of lines. Good for large format printing with small file sizes. No full colour pictures can possibly be in vector format.

· Bitmaps
