Bugis Street, Singapore

Street Shopping Haven

Known for its colourful history and buzzing nightlife as a popular tourist attraction in the 1950s, Bugis Street has since been redeveloped over the years and is now a unique shopping destination attracting both tourists and locals.

Strategically located near the Bugis Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train station, it sits across the road from Parco Bugis Junction shopping mall and is within walking distance to another shopping mall, Iluma at Bugis.

Catering to anyone and everyone, Bugis Street is Singapore’s largest street shopping location featuring a wide and dynamic product mix at competitive prices. The warren of over 600 shops sell an eclectic range of trendy streetwear, bags, shoes, belts, watches, earrings, silver accessories, souvenirs and unique locally designed products.

The shops open daily from 11am to 10pm and this is one place in Singapore that shoppers can actually put their bargaining skills to test as prices are negotiable, which all adds to the vibrancy of this bustling street.

Before you shop till you drop, fuel up with a snack from one of the many shops selling local treats and fruit juices. Or rest your weary feet at the outlets offering beauty services like manicures and pedicures, hair extensions and the like – at reasonable rates.

Little Red Dot

Bugis Street underwent another facelift last year, to add additional retail space to the already successful shopping location. Referencing Singapore’s nickname, the new area is called the Little Red Dot and serves as a platform for budding entrepreneurs and local designers to showcase their talent and sell their exclusively-designed merchandise and services.

Shopping in Comfort

This seems a bit of a paradox but it really is a pleasurable street shopping experience at Bugis Street, which is quite rare in Southeast Asia. For starters, shoppers do not have to browse elbow to elbow with each other thanks to generous, well-designed spaces. The walkways are spacious while open-concept shopfronts provide ample room for you to manoeuvre.

And despite Singapore being hot and humid, you won’t be sweating buckets at Bugis Street as it is now air-conditioned and the cleverly designed high roofing structure allows natural skylight onto the street walk, creating a bright and breezy atmosphere. Powerful cooling and lighting systems have also been installed, setting a new benchmark to the street shopping experience.

Indeed, Bugis Street offers a unique street shopping environment with a distinctly local flavour.
