Founded in 1989, The Canadian International School (CIS) has grown successfully into a full-service premiere educational institution, offering kindergarten through grade 12 classes and enjoying a strong and vibrant reputation as well as a very loyal following in the expat community in Singapore. Its diverse student body of approximately 2,000, represents over 50 countries – a world-class community that is,in itself a testimony to its world-class status.
While the elementary, middle and high school campuses are currently in three separate locations, all will be integrated into one campus in Jurong West which will be a state-of-the-art facility that caters to each student’s needs. Aside from the sports complex that boasts three gymnasiums and two swimming pools, there will be an arts center, a 400-seat amphitheater, two libraries and two cafeterias. There will also be outdoor playing fields to be enjoyed by the students, which are not always found in city schools commonly limited by space constraints.
Responding to the demand for quality education on the East Coast, CIS recently opened an East Campus that goes from Early Childhood (age 3) through Grade 8 (as of August 2008). The East Campus, also known as CIS Tanjong Katong campus (tel: 6345 1573) is CIS’ largest campus to date. The campus is housed on a heritage site that preserves the historic value of the building while updating it into a facility that holds fully air-conditioned classroom, an outdoor playground, a large gymnasium, a bicycle track, futsal and basketball courts, canteen with kitchen facilities and a vast open field.
CIS also operates out of three other locations. The Elementary Campus (tel: 6467 1732) is in Toh Tuck Road and offers classes from Early Childhood to Grade 3. The Middle School Campus (tel: 6875 1519) is in Bukit Tinggi Road and runs classes from Grade 4 to 8. Older students go to the High School Campus (tel: 6323 0208) in Kampong Bahru Road. This campus handles Grades 9 to 12.
Following the International Baccalaureate Program, CIS offers the primary and middle year programs as well as the IB diploma. CIS is also accredited to award the Ontario Secondary School Diploma to qualified students.
Recognising the importance of a well-rounded education, CIS distinguishes itself by going beyond the classroom in more ways than one. CIS operates an Open Minds program that seeks to make what the students learn in the classroom relevant to their lives by taking trips outside of the classroom for hands on training and experience, sometimes for several days. And there is the Wednesday Afternoon Experimental Learning Program where classes are suspended in exchange for exploration of new experiences like drama, music, technology, kayaking, golf, and tennis. Finally, there is the wealth of opportunity for students to explore numerous extra-curricular activities, from various clubs to sports to community outreach programs. Ever mindful of the modern student in this brave new world of technology, the school has instituted the Laptop Learning Programme to enhance this kind of literacy.
Above all, CIS is committed to preparing its students to become complete and independent individuals who are global citizens of the world -- successful in their endeavors, well-rounded in their outlook and responsible for themselves and the world around them.
