EtonHouse International School, Singapore

Joy of Learning

At EtonHouse International School, education is about more than imparting knowledge; it is also about building character and empowering each individual to be an enthusiastic lifelong learner, global citizen, and leader of the future. EtonHouse aims to develop each child into a well-balanced individual with a genuine thirst for learning – and the courage to embrace the decisions, and take the actions, to make the world a better place.

EtonHouse believes that children must learn to live and socialise with their fellow human beings as part of a considerate and mutually supportive community. Each child at EtonHouse will acquire social skills and the confidence to communicate freely and comfortably with both adults and peers – in a happy, relaxed and safe environment.

International-mindedness is at the core of all truly relevant 21st century educational practice. EtonHouse seeks to embed this awareness and sensitivity into the hearts and minds of all its students so that their understanding of what it is to be a global citizen is reflected in their decision-making and actions.

“We are laying the foundation for children growing up in the 21st century. EtonHouse students are encouraged to be environmentally conscious and responsible. We start young, so that the children grow up to be responsible citizens who positively influence their immediate socio-cultural context,” says Mrs Ng Gim Choo, Founder and Group Managing Director of EtonHouse.

EtonHouse schools inculcate simple “green” habits in their students, habits such as recycling and switching off the lights and air conditioners when the classroom is empty.

Students are also encouraged to take learning risks. “We encourage children to explore, to question, to take risks and undertake new challenges. We therefore believe in offering children the freedom to investigate and learn from their mistakes thus encouraging positive self-concepts and a strong sense of independence,” shares Mrs Ng.

Children are supported by a committed team of passionate staff “who love to work with children”. EtonHouse educators are recruited from all over the world – the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan and Singapore – and they are involved in continuous professional development during their tenure. Professional development is provided through the EtonHouse Education Centre, the Group’s in-house training, research and development arm, together with international presenters from many educational settings around the world. EtonHouse places great emphasis upon its research-based pedagogical approach and offers regular industry workshops that attract educators from the Asian region and around the globe.

An Inspired Curriculum

EtonHouse operates over 35 schools in Singapore, China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia and Korea. Together, these schools educate over 3,000 children from 54 different nationalities – with ages ranging from 18 months to 18 years.

As we live in a world with almost no boundaries, it is important to prepare children to live and participate in an actively changing world. The curriculum at EtonHouse is thus delivered in a multicultural environment where teaching and learning are joyful experiences. Each student is supported in academic, intellectual, moral and physical development in an environment which promotes respect, trust and positive encouragement.

EtonHouse’s early childhood curriculum is inspired by the Reggio Emilia educational project of northern Italy while the Primary Years Programme follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy of inquiry-based learning and the Literacy and Numeracy strategies from the United Kingdom. EtonHouse International School is an authorised International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme IB PYP World School. This World School status has been held since June, 2007.

Through the IB philosophy, students take responsibility for their own learning. Their curiosity and skills of observation are supported and valued, forming the basis of the curriculum which aims to build skills of exploration and discovery; investigation and research; collaboration and team membership abilities.

EtonHouse also has an outstanding second language programme offering Mandarin, Japanese and Hindi. A Chinese Cultural Programme teaching the history and culture of China is an important complementary feature of the Mandarin Programme, as are the after-school Parents’ Mandarin classes which enable parents to gain the necessary language skills to be able to support their own children’s learning. Daily classes are offered in all major languages, with Pre-SAP immersion classes provided for children in Kindergarten 1 and Year 1. “With China emerging as an economic superpower, many expatriates want their children to learn Mandarin during their stay here so we are seeing a stronger demand,” explains Mrs Ng.
