Al-Faisaliah Complex

Al Faisaliah - The $320 million Al Faisaliah complex is the Foundation’s most spectacular investment. Comprising of five separate operations under a single management, the Office Tower, Hotel, Retail Mall, Hotel Suites as well as the Banquet & Conference Centre are a landmark in the heart of Olaya, Riyadh’s high-end business district. Designed by UK architects Foster & Partners, a commercial balance between the diverse entities ensures successful cross-trading opportunities. With all the profits from the complex going towards the Foundation’s extensive academic, scientific, cultural and community programmes concept represents the perfect example of profitability plus impact.

Onwards & Upwards

King Faisal’s son, the current Director- General, is HRH Prince Khalid Al- Faisal, governor of Makkah Province in western Saudi Arabia, which includes Islam’s holiest city, Mecca, as well as Saudi Arabia’s main seaport and second largest city, Jeddah. Under his stewardship, KFF has evolved into a vibrant organisation that espouses diverse initiatives reflecting the steady progress - within an Islamic context – that represents the hallmark of modern Saudi Arabia today.

Progressive nation building cannot be sustainable unless it is underpinned by institutions that exist to uplift, inspire and protect people in need. Whether it’s a grant to a talented student for post-graduate studies abroad, funding for hospitals, libraries or mosques, or a prize to an eminent scholar, benevolence enhances opportunities and therefore life. Once it is coupled with stringent selection procedures, a proven track record of excellence and a successful partnership between partners and stakeholders, it becomes infinitely powerful. King Faisal was credited for bringing prosperity to his Kingdom thanks to his ability in leveraging the nation’s wealth wisely and sustainably. This can be seen in the meticulous way in which the civic apparatus was developed during his 11-year rule - from the judiciary, infrastructure and defense, to enlightened welfare, education and labour policies - all within the clear Islamic parameters that he held paramount. A

similar premise has been adopted by his eight sons, the current trustees of the KFF, in the management of this charitable entity that embodies his vision today.

Although the Foundation welcomes donations, it does not rely on this type of income to fulfill its mission. A carefully managed portfolio of investments, mainly in income-generating properties, create the revenues required to manage this vast operation, retaining the financial independence to grow existing programmes and develop new ones.

Over the years therefore, strategic business partnerships that match the ethical calibre and operating efficiencies of the Foundation have been fostered. This approach not only fuels the revenues of the Foundation consistently, but by acting as an agent for change, it also strengthens the socio-economic fibre of the Kingdom by creating jobs and educational opportunities.

Over the past three decades the KFF has touched numerous people’s lives worldwide. The varied programmes have either directly or indirectly fostered the fundamental driver of growth and hope. With the common thread of Islamic cultural preservation and the improvement of the human condition woven into the fabric of the Foundation’s initiatives, it has evolved as a role model for similar institutions regionally.

instance, benevolence is not merely viewed as a handing out aid. All financial assistance is designed towards fostering self sufficiency, and creating opportunities such as employment. In addition, numerous scholarships rewarding outstanding academic achievements have been initiated. The renowned KFF-Prince of Wales Chevening Scholarship for greater understanding between the Islamic and Western worlds started in 1997 awards two scholarships annually for the study of Islam at postdoctoral level.

Aside from these examples of munificence however, the King Faisal International Prize captures the popular collective imagination like nothing else. Rewarding scientific scholarship and acknowledging those who exceptionally serve Islam and Muslims, Arabic Literature, Medicine and Science has evolved into nurturing many of the leading thinkers of this age. Fifteen winners of the King Faisal International Prize winners have ultimately proceeded to win Nobel prizes.

And the list goes on. With the establishment of schools and universities such as the King Faisal School, Alfaisal University, Prince Sultan College for Tourism & Hotel Sciences as well as the Effat University, the tools for this academic achievement are established for the overall future upliftment of the nation. Whilst with the King Faisal Centre for Research and Islamic Studies, the achievements of the Arab-Islamic past and a modern appreciation of this cultural identity, are promoted with an outstanding library complex, manuscript and conservation laboratory as well as an in-house publishing house, lectures about various topics, series of reports, and Visiting Researcher Programs. Together this is how Islam’s rich heritage can be preserved for generations to come.

Why?

In the service of academic brilliance, awards received by KFIP laureates testify to the exceptional quality of their research. Fifteen of these winners have gone on to win Nobel prizes and dozens have won other awards that closely match the Nobel, such as The National Medal of Science, the Abel Prize, the Kyoto Prize, Prince of Asturias Prize, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, Marcel Benoist Prize, Gairdner Prize, Pritzker Prize and Shaw Prize. Professor Ahmed Zewail’s (KFIP1989; Nobel 1999) ingenious method of photographing chemical reaction at a shutter speed of a thousandth of a trillionth of a second made it possible to see how chemical bonds break and reform. Professor Günter Blobel (KFIP 1996; Nobel 1999) discovered chemical signal tags, reminiscent of the luggage tags used in travel, which direct newly formed proteins to their exact location within the cell. It is the caliber of individuals such as these, combined with a rigorous selection process, which have earned the King Faisal International Prize international acclaim.
