Foreword by Sturla Henriksen, CEO of Norwegian Shipowners Association

The link between Norway and the rest of the world

The maritime industry holds a unique place in Norway’s economy and society. Norwegian shipowners create value and identity. Along the Norwegian coast, shipowners large and small constitute profitable links between Norway and the rest of the world.

On the wide oceans, between Norway and the ports of Europe, and in the offshore industry, Norwegian shipowners are also world-leaders. The Norwegian maritime industry as a whole is one of the very strongest internationally, comprising a maritime knowledge environment of global power and attractive force. For the Norwegian economy, this yields impressive results, creating value and employment all along our extended coastline. It generates knowledge and technical innovation, which in turn produce new companies and sectors. And Norway’s global impact results in environmental benefits, high social standards and more committed social responsibility in international shipping.

Private owners who establish, operate and grow companies are the lifeblood of Norwegian business. Sound and long-term framework conditions for private ownership is the foundation our national welfare and well-being are built on. The Norwegian oil adventure was realised on the basis of maritime expertise developed through the generations. Out of the petroleum activities in the North Sea, Norwegian shipowners have developed what is probably the world’s most expert, advanced and competitive offshore environment. For the most demanding operations, where the forces of nature are most powerful and concerns for safety and the environment are paramount, Norwegian shipowners have a unique international position. This offshore environment is ready to play its part when the next chapter of Norwegian offshore energy production comes to be written.

Norway’s brand image as an attractive country for investing in and operating maritime activities needs to be built on and strengthened. Furthering this aim with a Norwegian perspective remains a political imperative.
