Changi Airport, Singapore

World’s Best Airport

Discover why the “Feeling is First Class” at Changi Airport.

By far the world’s most awarded airport, Changi Airport has garnered more than 360 accolades since opening in 1981. It has been named ‘World’s Best Airport 2010’ by SkyTrax for the third time, ‘Best Airport in the World’ by all the Business Traveller magazines in the United Kingdom, United States, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Germany and China, as well as ‘Best Airport in the World’ by Conde Nast Traveller (US and UK) and ‘World’s Leading Airport’ at the World Travel Awards. These prestigious honours are the result of operational efficiencies, service excellence and constant innovations in delivering a wonderful airport experience.

Spread over only 1,300 hectares of land, Changi Airport comprises four terminals: Terminals 1, 2 and 3, as well as the Budget Terminal for low-cost carriers. Together, the four terminals have the capacity to efficiently handle over 70 million passengers every year. In 2009, more than 37.2 million passengers comfortably passed through Changi Airport. And in 2010, the airport handled a record-breaking 40 million passenger movements. To commemorate the occasion, a lucky traveller even won S$40,000 worth of Changi Airport shopping vouchers that needed to be spent within 40 minutes at the airport!

The leading air hub in the Asia Pacific serves more than 90 airlines flying to over 200 cities around the world, with an estimated 5,100 flights each week – that’s one flight every two minutes! It is also the world’s busiest Airbus A380 hub with 140 super-jumbo flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, London, Zurich, Tokyo and Hong Kong every week.

Enhancements & Upgrading

Never one to rest on its laurels, Changi Airport constantly reinvents itself by upgrading its facilities to enhance the passenger experience. Little wonder then that its impressive rollcall of awards keeps on expanding.

For instance, Terminal 1, the oldest of the four, is undergoing upgrading works to improve passenger flow. The refurbished interior will also feature a ‘Tropical City’ concept to welcome passengers with a warm, welcoming ambience. Alterations to the terminal include skylights and a lantern structure along the facade, extensions to the main terminal building, remodelling of the viewing gallery and a centralisation of the departure immigration areas. The Departure Transit Mall will also be expanded to accommodate more shopping and dining options.

First Class Experience

The Changi Airport experience is truly second to none as efficient operations are a hallmark of the airport.

Travellers in and out of Singapore have come to love the stress-free travel experience that is unique to Changi Airport. Any passenger that disembarks at Changi is soon impressed by the smooth, swift immigration clearance and baggage retrieval – all within 30 minutes! And behind the scenes, initiatives like SWIFT (Service Workforce Instant Feedback Transformation) are working to ensure that issues onthe- ground are identified quickly and rectified promptly.

Tourists would also be glad to know that a new electronic, paperless process of Good and Service Tax (GST) refunds is being developed to make it much easier for them to receive their refunds whether in cash or through credit cards.

Then there are the excellent service initiatives delivered by all 28,000 staff and more than 200 organisations operating at Changi Airport. The committed frontline team at the airport attends to passengers with a highly personalised service ethic through programmes like Care@Changi, which provides extra assistance to expectant mothers, those with infants-in-arms and reduced mobility travellers, who also enjoy priority queue lanes at security checkpoints and taxi stands.

Finally, there are the positively surprising moments that travellers are regularly treated to, like celebrity meetand- greets with Lady Gaga for instance.

All these brand values that make Changi Airport so unique in the world are effectively captured and communicated in its newest advertising campaign. Titled ‘The Feeling is First Class’, the campaign features visitors from all over the world who were simply enamoured with their

Changi Airport experience. Why, one of them even proclaimed that it doesn’t matter which seat you have purchased on the plane because when you travel through Changi Airport, the feeling is first class.
