University of Pretoria

Managing business in a South African context is not an easy thing to do. We live in a world of enormous complexity, excitement and challenge, and the speed and scale of many of the driving forces that are changing the landscape of business and our society are extraordinary.

For those individuals who wish to lead, make a difference and who are open to changing themselves, the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) is a remarkable place to learn the business knowledge, skills and insights you need to take the lead in business.

As the ‘business school for business’, GIBS has always believed that we can play a significant role in South Africa by helping to build our nation’s competitiveness by ensuring that leaders in our business community – whether those in a corporate environment or the entrepreneurially spirited – have the opportunity to develop their skills and business acumen to meet the enormous opportunities that a dynamic and rapidly changing world presents.

Founded in 2000, GIBS is an internationally accredited business school based in Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic hub. Established as a place where people with potential, healthy ambition and respect for best practice are willing to engage likeminded peers and colleagues, the campus and its facilities have been designed to create a learning environment in which we all stretch our thinking, challenge existing ideas and develop a personal and organisational sense of where we need to go next.

Since its inception and over the years of significant growth, we have been privileged to see a large number of talented executives graduate through our many programmes.

With more than 75 South African and global companies and organisations investing in the development of their leaders through GIBS, ensuring return on investment for our partner companies is an undeniable prerequisite of our success. Simply stated we aim to ensure that the benefits gained by our clients – and individuals – through the provision of knowledge, skills and qualities that improve performance outweigh the investment of time and finances made.

Building your, and South Africa’s, competitiveness

GIBS offers prospective postgraduate students the choice of two world-class, internationally accredited MBA programmes, including the full-time Entrepreneurship MBA; a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration; as well as a Doctorate in Business Administration, an advanced study programme which builds on the solid foundation of a first-class MBA.

GIBS also offers a range of certificate programmes including the Programme for Management Development and two Certificate Programmes in Finance and Marketing; a comprehensive array of executive education programmes ranging from GIBS Forums and Conferences to oneto three-day short courses; a number of senior executive development courses, including the premier Global Executive Development Programme, the African Leadership Programme and the Finance Executive Development Programme; as well as in-house Company Specific Programmes designed to meet clients’ specific needs across the public, private and NGO sectors both locally and internationally.

Over and above the traditional business school offering, GIBS also offers the Centre for Leadership and Dialogue, a series of programmes aimed at bringing together the emerging and current leadership of South Africa to create a shared vision necessary for the building of a successful nation.

For seven years running GIBS has been ranked as one of the top business schools globally by the prestigious Financial Times, the only African business school to be placed in the top 50 business schools worldwide for executive education programmes. GIBS is accredited by the Association of MBAs, the Council for Higher Education and is a member of the South African Business Schools Association, the Association of African Business Schools and the European Academy of Business in Society.

GIBS journey over the last 10 years would not have been possible without the support of Sir Donald Gordon; the University management and leadership; our corporate partners; staff; students and delegates. It has been an eventful and exciting journey, and the success of our first 10 years has laid long-term foundations for the future. As we enter our second decade of operations, GIBS is now poised to embark on a further period of growth and expansion.
