Defining Change

"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."

- Barack Obama
President
United States of America

Washington, DC (District of Columbia), is the capital of the United States of America, founded on July 16, 1790 it hosts the three branches of the federal government, a separate city government, and a thriving business economy.  The city itself is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia (VA) to the southwest and Maryland (MD) to the north and east; DC-MD-VA are the components of the National Capital Region, or Greater Washington.

Greater Washington  is one of the leading technology centers in the world of entrepreneurship with the greatest concentration in research and development, telecommunications, networking, technology and bio-tech companies, all driven by Teddy Roosevelt's spirit of self-fulfillment: The Man in the Arena.

All the companies you would recognize from Silicon Valley are represented here, along with hundreds of start-ups in every imaginable technology, including software development, web hosting, telecommunications, biotechnology, and nano-technology.  The forward thinking state and regional governments developed technology incubator centers to support the growth of technology entrepreneurs; Montgomery County's Planning Department's Research and Technology Center and Northern Virginia's Center for Information Technology have inspired a multitude of entrepreneurs, capitalizing on the concentration of university, government, and private sector research and development centers.

Maryland's I-270 Technology Corridor hosts 300,000 workers and 18,000 information and bio-technology businesses, to include such high profile home-grown companies as Lockheed Martin, Human Genome Sciences, Digene, Medimune, and GeneLogic.   Federal research centers there include the National Institute of Health (NIH), the National Institute of Standards, and the Departments of Energy and Health and Human Services. Little known R&D facilities, such as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute use emerging and innovative technologies to pursue biology's most challenging problems.   Further East, you'll find technology giants like Ciena and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory pushing technology to the outer limits.

The Dulles Technology Corridor in Northern Virginia is regarded as the "high tech colossus" with a multitude of telecommunications, networking, web-hosting, data-storage farms, and R&D centers.  It is an international leader in research, technology, and development oriented companies with more than 575,000 jobs, and 30,000 businesses, many of which are international.  Fortune magazine dubbed it the "Netplex" noting that it hosts the "vital electronic pathways that carry more than half of all traffic on the Internet. The region is home to more telecom and satellite companies than any other place on earth."  Stroll through the Reston Town Center and you'll pass the offices of Microsoft, Rolls Royce, Accenture, L3 Communications, ComScore, Google, Oracle, Microsoft, SAIC, and Northrup Grumman.  On the five minute drive to Dulles International Airport, you'll pass Raytheon, Sprint-Nextel, Verizon, and EDS.  Further on, you'll find yourself surrounded by satellite campuses of a number of major regional and out-of-state universities.

Throughout Greater Washington, the local governments are building state-of-the-art transportation systems to efficiently carry nearly a million employees to these technology centers, which are growing the future of the National Capital Region, our nation, and the world.
